What Causes Severe Acid Reflux And Difficulty In Swallowing?

Hi, I had severe heartburn come on suddenly about 6 hours ago. I am finding it extremely difficult to swallow, and as such have not had any food or water which isn t helping my condition. I also cannot take oral antacids, nor can I take my usual night time medications, because it causes too much pain in my chest when I swallow. Is there anything which can help which does not involve trying to swallow something?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Unfortunately no, any at home measures would involve the use of an oral agent. At your doctor's office and/or hospital there are IV versions of reflux medications that can be used.

Though it is very painful, you may need to try using paracetamol to see if this eases your pain, you can use either tablet form or use the liquids that children would normally use if this would be easier.

Approximately half an hour after the painkiller is used, you can try an antacid. Again, there are pediatric versions of many antacids that may be easier to swallow and you can ask your pharmacist which options they have available.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
