What Causes Severe Acid Reflux Despite Taking Carafate And Zantac Post Gallbladder Surgery?

I recently had gallery bladder surgery. Since then my acid reflux at times is debilitating. Nothing helps and it s horribly painful, like a 10, for hours. I take prilosec every day. Nexium didn t help at all. I also take Zantac often. I recently went to my Dr. and she thinks I have an ulcer so I am taking Kerafate. It s helped a bit, no more major flare ups but I feel like it s right there at any moment. I did a stool test, she was looking for hpylori. It was negative but all the other aspects of the test were elevated. Inflammation, etc. What could be going on? She said my symptoms were upper GI, BUT my results are all lower GI......... I M SCARED

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms seem to me as Postcholecystectomy Syndrome which is very common following gallbladder surgery for first 2 years.

Actually, bile is refluxing back in your stomach and causing upset. Also flow of bile acid is unregulated in the lower gastrointestinal tract which causing all the main symptoms you are currently facing.

As you have already tried multiple medications for this including Omeprazole, Esomeprazole, Ranitidine, Sucralfate etcetera, there is very little left to manage. But, I would recommend trying Psyllium/Natural Fiber and Dexlansoprazole (DDR) medicine.

Also, there are various bile acid sequestrants including Cholestyramine which may help a little bit. And if you feel the same despite all these measures, I would suggest for Endoscopy to see actually which is going on in your upper gastrointestinal tract.

Most of my patients also report improvement on propping the bed up while sleeping.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ameet Kumar
