What Causes Severe Acid Reflux When Diagnosed With Hiatal Hernia?

I have been diagnosed with hiatal hernia... I am getting worse on waking up with severe acid reflux!!! And having to sleep sitting up nightly. I was advised for surgery.... About 5 months ago. Can you tell me if thus reflux is related to having hiatal hernia?

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Hiatus hernia is a condition in which a part of stomach enters chest.
The acid contents are prevented from entering the esophagus by pinching action of gastro-esophageal junction (GE junction).
But when the hiatus hernia is formed, the pinching action of GE junction is lost.
Surgical correction consists of surgical excision of the hiatus hernia.
The symptoms of acid reflux can be prevented by medication which decrease acidity and prevent reflux.
Proton pump inhibitor is a group of drugs which decrease acidity and prevent reflux.
I suggest you to consult your doctor for treatment and surgical management.

Thanks and take care
