My granddaughter is 23 yrs old & has had acne on face & back for sometime & has it has gotten progressively worse over the years--doctor recently prescribed birth control, without explanation of how this would help. Could acne be related to PCOS-- my granddaughter is thin, has some access hair on arms. How would taking birth control help?
Hello. Thanks for asking on Healthcaremagic. Pcos is a metabolic disorder associated with hirsutism, acne and small cysts in the ovaries. It is caused by over sensitivity to insulin and deranged levels of LH FSH hormones. Birth control pills are useful in suppressing the hormones and stabilizing the cycles. Few months of birth control pills will not harm the patient and might cause normalcy of the internal hormones and hence acne. Hope I helped. Thanks.
