What Causes Severe Ankle Pain After Persistent Running?

I am a moderate runner and log about 18 to 20 miles a week. I am having a pain in my right ankle area for about 2 months and it seems to be getting worse. While running today (4 miles) I thought I was going to have to stop about 10 times due to pain. It almost feels like a high ankle sprain however I am positive it is not a sprain. The outside ankle bone hurts and my lower tibia or tibia hurts up to my calf muscle. It feels like my ankle could snap any moment because it doesn t feel strong. There is no swelling or discoloration. Pain level is about a 7 on a scale of 10 being the worst. Have you heard of symptoms like this before? stress fracture? Thank you
