What Causes Severe Anxiety Along With Rapid Heart Rate During Nights?

I m on thyroid med and have severe anxiety. I have been waking some nights with a rapid heartbeat that takes awhile to slow down . This in fact scares the crap out of me like I m dying. Any ideas on what it is that could cause this discomfort. It does not happen every night . Thanks

Hello,

Some anxiety and palpitations are common adverse effects related to thyroid medication. For this reason, I would recommend taking Metoprolol at low dose to help prevent palpitations and anxiety. You can also take melatonin supplements to help with the sleep.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
