What Causes Severe Arthritis In The Right Knee?

I recently had what I was told was an arthuritis flare up in my right knee. Very painful. Exrays were taken and revealed there was no visable cartilage in my knee. I was given a steroid shot which took 11 days to begin working. I have an apt with another orthopedic doctor to see what heeds to be done. I am 80 years old and my question is this, if the problem is cartilage and not the bones themselves, will I still have to have a complete knee replacement?

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hi, I have gone through your question. I am a practicing anaesthesiologist and pain consultant.
As per your symptoms, you are suffering from osteoarthritis, a type of arthritis which occurs when cartilage tissues at the end of the bone gradually breakdown. It's a degenerative joint disease.
Most of the time, along with cartilage destruction , underlying bone also wear down. Because of cartilage destruction knee movements become very painful.
I would like to suggest, you have to go for complete knee replacement as your doctor has suggested. Along with that lifestyle modifications, exercise, weight loss will help a lot.
You can use pain killers like paracetamol and tramadol
