What Causes Severe Back Ache And Leg Pain?

I had sudden onset of severe back pain Monday. Husband took me to Dr Tues. Got 7 days decreasing prednisone, x-rays clear, blood cell count normal. Improved one day, slightly, but since, pain seems to be moving. Back slightly improved, but now leg involvement, particularly right leg. Having great difficulty bearing weight at this time. needing assistance to walk. Have follow up with Dr - but not for 1 week- next Fri. Am not optimistic. Thoughts?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Sudden back pain followed by pain in lower limbs is indicative of nerve compression in the spinal area.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
First of all take full bed rest so that the body, muscles and mind is relaxed which in turn relaxes the muscles and can lessen the pain.
Control of stress and anxiety.
Local rubefacient liniment.
Painkillers with anti-inflammatory properties as per the body weight in proper doses.
Ask for MRI of the spine to get the cause which can be as follows:
Slipped inter-vertebral discs.
Foraminal narrowing.
Spinal cord compression by narrowing of spinal canal.
Intrinsic or extrinsic factors like lump or so.
Once a proper diagnosis has been made then the surgery or so will help you to get well soon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
