What Causes Severe Back Pain And Abdominal Discomfort?

Hi. I am experiencing terrible back pain (all over, including shoulders, lower back and buttocks) and abdominal fullness/protrusion. It feels somewhat as if I m constipated, however, much more severe and I have had no problems going to the bathroom or passing gas. I went to Urgent Care last night (2nd night of pain) and they ran blood tests and did a scan - they found nothing wrong. I m still in incredible pain. In addition, I have spoken to a few co-workers who were with me last week at a conference and some of them are experiencing similar symptoms, although to a lesser degree. Any idea on what the cause could be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

All these symptoms of severe back pain, abdominal discomfort and fullness/bloating could be due to stomach upset.

Stomach upset and bloating is likely due to gastroenteritis or irritable bowel syndrome or acute gastritis but here there is no need to worry as it can be cured by medications and diet.

As you have already done routine blood tests and ultrasound scan which came normal but you may undergo upper GI endoscopy if fullness or discomfort remains persistent.

Meanwhile, you should take antacids (pantoprazole) available over the counter with antibiotics (ofloxacin with ornidazole) and symptomatic treatment.Your nearby local physician may prescribe it.

Avoid oily, spicy and non-veg foods for at least 3 to 5 days and must not take alcohol.

You will feel better within 3 to 5 days of this medications.

If symptoms persists then see gastroenterologist who may advice you upper GI endoscopy and will give you further advice accordingly.

Regards,
