What Causes Severe Back Pain And Frequent Urination After Removing Kidney Stent?

I had kidney stone surgery 3 days ago. The dr. removed the stone using a basket and put in a stent. I was instructed to remove the stent today by pulling on the strings, no problem. It has now been 7 hours since i have done this and I have bad back pain on the same side of my kidney stone. I also don t seem to be urinating very much. At first when I pulled out the stent the sensation to urinate all the time disappeared, that was nice but now that feeling has returned with the back pain. Is this normal and if so how long will it last?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of removal of kidney stone by basket and removal of stent by you as instructed by your Doctor but followed by back pain in kidney region and sensation of passing urine.
The above history indicates one of the following:
Particle of stone still closing the outlet at pelvi-ureteric junction causing the obstruction and pain.
Urinary tract infection.
Some sort of obstruction still prevailing.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult your Doctor or go to ER.
Ultrasonography and X-ray of abdomen will show the cause.
May need repeat stenting.
If urine test is showing infection, you need a course of an antibiotic, symptomatic and supportive medications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, General Surgeon
