What Causes Severe Back Pain In An Elderly Woman?

Hello, my mother (74 yrs) has a back pain that gets worse through the day into night. Could this be her kidneys? She has been taking cranberry pills for a urine infection. Should she just take an over-the-counter painkiller for this? Does she need to see a doctor for this? She did have a bad fall 3 years ago and needed stitches over her right eye. What needs to be done?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Severe back pain in the elderly can be due to osteoporosis, osteoarthritis of the spine, spinal compression fracture, Coccydynia, fibromyalgia, etc.

You are suggested to get your mother physically examined by an orthopedic surgeon. She will have to go through some blood tests, investigations & Imaging tests.

Her treatment will depend upon the pathology detected. In the meantime, for relief, you can give her NSAIDS & vitamins with minerals.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
