Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Back Pain Post Chiari Malformation Decompression Surgery?
My 16 yr old daughter (post chiari malformation decompression surgery, current epileptic) has had severe pain in the back if her head 3 times in the last 24 hours, lasting approximately 30 minutes, which is relieved by a bloody nose. The pain is a sudden onset, and is immediately gone once the nosebleed starts
First of all, it's sad to know what your daughter had been going through lately.
Based on the history you have shared, she needs to be reviewed as soon as possible by her primary neurosurgeon and may need repeat scans. It can be due to signs of fluctuations in cerebrospinal fluid pressures.
Also, post-surgical symptoms may range fr back pain to dizziness but bleeding through the nose, needs to be reviewed to look for any association with her neurological disorder.
Clotting profile, platelets function tests and counts may also be needed as part of baseline work up. Meanwhile, OTC analgesics like acetaminophen can be used only for symptomatic relief.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
