What Causes Severe Burning Sensation On The Hands While Treating COPD?

My husband has severe burning pain on the back of his hands. He has COPD, Hep C and makes kidney stones. He had a chemical exposure in an aluminum plant 30 years ago that caused the same pain. It eventually went away then. Hydrocodone 325 doesn t give any relief. Neither does Voltaren gel. he is 73 years old and a retired Sheet Metal worker.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since the pain has grown chronic you are suggested to get your husband examined by a GP. The pain can be due to nerve issues. If required he should get Nerve Conduction tests & Nerve biopsy done.

He can apply Soframycin cream to get relieve from burning sensation in the hands. He should take vitamin B6, B12, Folic acid supplements or food.

At times, COPD medicines may cause peripheral neuropathy due to the hypoxia of the nerves that trigger pain.

Get him assessed & nerves treated. In the meantime he can use pain relieving sprays & take Combiflam-400mg orally after food, one sos when required for relieve from pain.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
