Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My Father is 66 years, he has been leaving with diabetes and High Blood Pressure for over ten years now, recently he has been having a problem with movement of the legs and balance,he has been using a walking stick for the past two weeks. the doctors took a CT scan last week and found that he has Severe Cerebral Atrophy. What should we expect from this condition, how will his life be and how life threatening is this condition? the doctor says his brain has shrunk a lot. Desperate for information...
both the conditions diabetes and hypertension cause major effect of arteries by accelerating atherosclerosis and narrowing the lumen of arteries, this reduces the blood supply to organ and there is gradual slow destruction of the organ or atrophy, to explain you the condition in lay-man's language, brain has enough reserve to continuing to function normally in-spite of atrophy. if your father is not having any memory and cognitive function issues please discuss with your doctor and try options which increase blood supply to the brain and delay the progress, consultation a good neurologist, diabetologist and a physician will be in order to effectively manage the condition. if the condition is allowed to progress unchecked it will ultimately result in senile/dementia.
