What Causes Severe Chest Pain After A Heart Bypass Surgery?

my husband is 10 weeks post quadruple heart bypass surgery. he h as been doing great. this week he has had a sharp pain develop in his chest. He went to the doctor and they checked for pneumonia and listened, but thought it was just a pulled muscle. He is now running a low-grade fever every evening and the pain is turning up on the other side of the chest and moves to the back. Also today he has a sever shortness of breath when he exerts himself, which he has not had since his surgery. Do I need to take him to the hospital? or just get him into the doctor tomorrow.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

With a history of post-cardiac surgery, it would be best for him to be seen as soon as possible.

It is likely that an infection is present and a course of medication would be needed for resolution, the sooner it is started, the better for him.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
