What Causes Severe Constipation After Ceasing From Alcohol Intake?

two weeks ago I stopped drinking alcohol and have been constipated ever since. I have drank moderately for the past 15 years basically having a few drinks every night for that long. I am starting to take metamuscil but will this problem go away on its own? If so, what time frame am i looking at?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you are suffering from constipation that is due to withdrawal symptoms of alcohol as you were used to it since 15 years..
It can also be due to other common causes like lack of dietary fibres, lack of physical activity, stress, dehydration, eating disorders, Irritable bowel syndrome etc..
As of now you can start taking high fibre diet and add more of green leafy vegetables and fruits in diet..
You should also drink plenty of water.
You can also do moderate workout..
You can also take walk after meals..
You can also take stool softener like Docusate and continue taking Metamucil..
In case of no relief in a week consult a Gastroenterologist and get evaluated and he can advise you to get Colonoscopy done to rule out the exact cause and treat you accordingly..
You can be advised prescription drugs like Linclotide and Lubiprostone..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
