What Causes Severe Constipation After Gastric Bypass Surgery?

MY GIRLFRIEND JUST HAD GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY AND NOW HAS BAD CONSTIPATION. She took magnesium citrate to hopefully help but it hasn t yet. Been about a half hour ago. Any suggestions? Also she took olive oil and lemon in warm water abut an hour ago. She says its getting painful.

Hi,

Noted the history about your girlfriend undergoing gastric bypass surgery, developed constipation, taken olive oil and lemon in warm water, Magnesium citrate half an hour ago, she says it is getting painful.
Since you have not mentioned when was the gastric bypass done, it is difficult to comment on this part causing constipation.
Constipation with pain should be considered an emergency and hence I would advise her the following:
Take her to ER .
Needs X-ray of abdomen in standing position.
Ultrasonography.
Soap and saline enema may be needed.
If there is any intestinal obstruction then conservative management in the form of nil orally, intravenous fluids and enema may be tried for a few days.
IF there is any emergency then she may need surgery.
