What Causes Severe Constipation And Blood In Bowels?

Hi..I had a laparotomy last January 2011 and since then, Im having problems with my bowel....constipated if I dont take laxatives. I had a small hemorrhoid when i gave birth with my second child but fairly manageable. Now, when I move my bowels, I notice bright red blood in the toilet mixed with water...mild pain on my rectum and blood when i wipe with tissue...but blood and rectal pain doesnt last long. Next day Im fine again...hemorrhoid tends to swell after bowel movement though,,next day Im fine again...is this purely a hemorrhoid problem or more serious one? Thanks a lot! Im 42, female, mother of 2...not obese..not a vegetarian...doesnt take medications as of now...only vitamins...thanks again...
