What Causes Severe Cough While Suffering From Hashimoto S Thyroiditis?

Hello, A am a 64 year old female with Hashimoto s Thyrioiditis which manifested about 4 years ago. I take Levothyroxine and get some relief from the symptoms of hypothyroidism. But over these four years I have had a chronic cough that originates in the area of the thyroid. I believe it is at least partially allergy related as it flares up around dust and mold. But it is getting worse and I go through coughing fits now every morning, and can be overtaken by one at any time throughout the day. My voice is weakened and I cannot have lengthy conversations with people without succumbing to coughing fits. I am wondering if the cough and constant throat irritation are related to the Hashimoto s. The cough is productive for the most part. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Hashimoto"s Thyroiditis -may cause goiter ( thyroid swelling) because of that difficulty in swallow and tightness around the neck may present.

The cough may be due to Allergy or infection. Some times Reflex Gastritis may produce dry cough.

So along with Thyroid tab .try some medication and review.

1.Tab.Pan 40 1 bid before food.
2.Tab.Montelukas LC 1 hs
3.Tab.Hetrazan 100 mg bid
4.Tab.Prednesolone 10 mg bid
5.Syrup.Ambriolyte D 5ml tid 5 days after food.

Do CBC/ESR/X-ray chest PA view/ECG. Review with the report.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
