Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had a horrible cough for almost 3 weeks. First week was the worst, my chest hurt to cough and still seems congested like I need to clear mucas. Throat hasn t hurt at all but cannot shake the cough. Since Thanksgiving I now seem to have sinus issue/clogged nose - NO smell, very little taste. I m allergic to so many antibiotics so I try not to take if not necessary... do you think one is needed? Cough doesn t hurt like bronchitis (which I ve had a few times) but could it be pneumonia?
If the cough is wet then the use of one or more mucolytics to help break up the mucus in the chest along with decongestant/anti histamine combination, may help. Examples of mucolytics are Bisolvan, Mucomyst, Guaifenesin, and these are over the counter medication. Decongestant/antihistamines are Zyrtec d, Claritine d, Allegra d or Benadryl d, also over the counter A topical decongestant can be added to this, for example OtrivineI.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
