What Causes Severe Coughing Spells Leading To Vomiting?

I have a bad cough that makes me gag and start to throw up. I have had MRI s and breathing test and they can t find the problem so they just give me cough syrup. I just recently got over the flu and now I m coughing and gaging up lumps of cold mixed with a little blood. What can this be? The cough has been going on for about two years now.
