Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I am concerned about my legs. I am very active and work out 3-5 times a week. 2 days ago I was working out and then went for a run. Immediately both my legs cramped up so bad in my calves. I continued to run for about 30 min. Today I can barley stand up and it hurts really bad. I am concerned because the muscles are twitching constantly and the back of my legs by my knees hurt so bad. MY right calve is swollen I am drinking a half gallon of water everyday. I am 32. Good health. I started taking birth control almost 2 months ago. Should I be concerned of a blood clot. Did i sustain an injury to my calves when I continued to run when I felt the cramp?
Your symptoms seem to be related to muscle overloading and cramps from overuse. I suggest to try stretching exercises before running and drink liquids. I also suggest to use electrolyte solution because the electrolyte imbalance due to sweating can also cause muscle cramps. As per your query: 1) In my opinion you should not be worried about blood clots because the risk is minimal 2) In case that you feel cramps, I suggest to stop running and try stretching exercises to help relieve the cramp.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
