What Causes Severe Deformity In The Leg After An Accident?

My brother had a serious accident while young. Now his foot up past the angle is severely deformed, he walks on the side of his foot as if it is the bottom. I just saw his foot and it is deep purple/black. Up to his knee his leg is just a stick. Is it dead? does he need amputation?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Injuries & bruises can turn the feet temporarily blue or black, they heal by themselves without treatment.

He can apply Ointment Thrombophob (Heparin) twice or thrice a day to do away with blood clots if any.

It should heal. If it does not & the color of the feet changes to purple than there might be some serious blood circulation problem.

Visit ER & get him physically examined else it may complicate to Ischemic foot.

Get all nerve function tests done to rule out any developing peripheral artery disease(PAD). PAD causes blackening of the feet.

Get him treated at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
