What Causes Severe Diarrhea After Taking Magnesium And Potassium Pills?
I was recently hospitalizIed out of state. I was hospitalized because I had very low sodium. Since returning home and seeing my primary doctor, I have been having bloodwork done. My doctor added magnesium and potassium. As a result of adding these pills, for two days, I had very bad diareah, terrible pains in my stomach and no sleep. My Doctor rook me off the pills temporarily and I am now back taking a 1/2 pill of each for two days. My question is that I go to the bathroom very frequently on a daily basis. Because of this I am wondering if my going to the bathroom so frequently is causing me too loose my electrolites and that is why they are so low.
Your hypothesis may be correct.
One of the common causes of low potassium and magnesium is diarrhea.
I would recommend you to use over the counter option such as Imodium and take daily probiotics.
I suggest you to continue taking magnesium supplements.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi,
