Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 26th month old son has had diarrhea one and off for the past 2 weeks and daycare reports continual sleepiness/out of it behavior. We put him to bed between 7 to 8 pm and he gets up between 4 to 5 am. We do not wake him up at that time, he just gets up then. He naps from 1 to 2 1/2 hours a day. We have tried changing his bed time and diet. Should I be concerned? Thank you.
Hi Thanks for posting on HCM You should be concerned but do not be too worried.Diarrhea in a child for over 2 weeks is a cause for concern given the effects of diarrhea like losing fluid and ions.Possible causes of persistent diarrhea is a child could include: bacterial, viral or parasitic digestive infections.Others systemic infections may also manifest with diarrhea in children like UTI, respiratory infection...I will advise you see the Doctor for examination and a stool exam/culture.In the meantime, you may: -Give the child oral rehydration salt and enough water to replenish the fluid and ions losses -Zinc tablets to help in intestinal mucosa repair From the results of the stool exam, more objective treatment may be prescribed by your Doctor. Hope this will help Best regards
