What Causes Severe Diarrhea In A Child?

My 26th month old son has had diarrhea one and off for the past 2 weeks and daycare reports continual sleepiness/out of it behavior. We put him to bed between 7 to 8 pm and he gets up between 4 to 5 am. We do not wake him up at that time, he just gets up then. He naps from 1 to 2 1/2 hours a day. We have tried changing his bed time and diet. Should I be concerned? Thank you.

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
You should be concerned but do not be too worried.Diarrhea in a child for over 2 weeks is a cause for concern given the effects of diarrhea like losing fluid and ions.Possible causes of persistent diarrhea is a child could include: bacterial, viral or parasitic digestive infections.Others systemic infections may also manifest with diarrhea in children like UTI, respiratory infection...I will advise you see the Doctor for examination and a stool exam/culture.In the meantime, you may:
-Give the child oral rehydration salt and enough water to replenish the fluid and ions losses
-Zinc tablets to help in intestinal mucosa repair
From the results of the stool exam, more objective treatment may be prescribed by your Doctor.
Hope this will help
Best regards
