What Causes Severe Diarrhea Post Surgery For Pulmonary Embolism?

68 years old I just got out of the hospital two days ago after 5.5 weeks. Went in with serious congestive heart failure. Have stage 4 renal cancer. Had two operations, one to remove cancerous right kidney 60% too large and not worth saving. Then two weeks later had second operation to remove cancerous blood clot in left pulmonary artery. Am having severe diarrhea since I left hospital - may have just been starting last day or two in hospital. Meds: bumetanide 2 mg twice daily, carvedilol 3.125 mg twice daily, enoxaprin 80 mg injections twice daily, metformin 1,000 mg twice daily, pantoprazole 40 mg daily before breakfast, synthroid 175 mcg oral before breakfast, also take calcium, magnesium oxide, multivitamin, omega-3, Vit D3, zinc, and coQ10. Don t see any interactions between meds that would cause this. Have diabetes and rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis. Have been drinking orange or grape joice, boost plus, eating vegetable/chicken noodle/jalapeno soups, polish sausage, baloney, small amt of bread -- not anything that has ever caused a problem before. Any thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I feel it's excess of liquid diet causing it along with damage to Lactobacilli due to antibiotics consumed post operatively. Have light to digest diet like plain rice, sago pudding, buttermilk with salt and sugar in small amounts. Drink sufficient boiled water with ORS. Take Lactobacillus suppliment. This should be normal in 4-5 days. If not or if the problem rises consult your doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
