What Causes Severe Dry Cough Only During Night?

I have had a dry hacking cough for about a week. Seems to go away during the day but at night it comes back in full force. So much so that at least once during the night, I am in a coughing fit. Will over the counter cough medicine eliminate this cough or should i get checked?

hi..
Welcome to HCm..
During nights when you are in laying down a little amount of discharge from your nose drops into the throat as post nasal drip causing irritation and thereby cough.
Also during sleeping the protective airway mechanisms are a little slower..
You can take a cough suppressant or can take lozenzes which may give some relief.
You can take semi recumbent position also for relief or side laying position.
HOpe this information helps..Take care..
