What Causes Severe Flatulence And Loose Stools In A Child With Asperger S Syndrome?

Hi, My son is a 14 year old athlete who has aspergers and is a dedicated health nut and athlete. Over the past year we have noticed a change in his bowel habits where he sits on the toilet about 4 times a day for a period of 10-30 minutes and just sputters with gas and loose stools. He did not tell us for a long time because he though it was normal. Over the past few months his weight is decreased he no longer does sports due to abdominal pain and he is having increased reactions to food. He also takes Guanfacine for ADHD. We are pursuing this with a GI and his Psychiatrist is looking into the meds. Do you have any thoughts on this? Thanks so much, Jen Boen YYYY@YYYY

Hello Dear. Your son might be having Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
People with IBS have symptoms that can include:

Diarrhea (often described as violent episodes of diarrhea)
Constipation
Constipation alternating with diarrhea
Belly pains or cramps, usually in the lower half of the belly, that get worse after meals and feel better after a bowel movement
A lot of gas or bloating
Harder or looser stools than normal (pellets or flat ribbon stools)
A belly that sticks out

Management of this condition involves diet restriction and medications. Regarding diet restrictions- low FODMAP diet. To know more about it kindly consult your doctor and dietician. High soluble fibre food stuff will help.
Medications include- anti spasmodics, anti gastritis drugs

Hope i have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.
All the best
With warm regards
Dr Sanjay Kini
