What Causes Severe Fluttering Sensation In The Left Ear?

Two nights ago when going to sleep I was jolted out of bed by a severe fluttering inside my left ear. Like a wild spasming. I immediately thought something had entered my ear. The spasms continued off and on for awhile until I was able to fall asleep. I could also hear what I would call a light tapping in my ear. I haven t had any more fluttering spasms since then but I continue to hear a crackling sound in my ear sometimes when I swallow, yawn or burp. Could you help me figure out what is going on? Thanks!

Hello,

Severe fluttering sensation in the ear is commonly due to some insect trapped in the middle ear or due to rhythmic contractions of the tensor tympani muscle called TT syndrome. This can be an anxiety disorder which when left untreated can complicate to noise induced tinnitus with noise induced partial / complete hearing loss in long term. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an ENT. If some insect is trapped it will be removed. If your symptoms are due to some developing pathology it will be treated with medicines / surgery. Get all the blood, imaging & audiometry test done. Your treatment will depend on the reports of the tests.
