What Causes Severe Gum Bleeding?

I have had pretty bad heartburn since March. I am now having trouble swallowing and I don t want to eat much. I went to the ER with heart attack symptoms in April but my heart if fine. I feel full or like my stomach is being pushed up. My throat started hurting 6 weeks ago and my neck is sore (swollen glands). I went to my dentist for my cleaning and she said she was concerned about the amount of bleeding in my gums (never had that happen before). I am normally a VERY VERY healthy and fit person. I m concerned now though.

Hi,

The severe reflux is likely contributing to the changes in your mouth and sore throat. You may want to consider testing for H pylori bacteria. This bacteria is sometimes present in the small intestine and stomach and it causes worsening of reflux symptoms.

If it is found then a 10 day to 2-week course of 2 antibiotics and reflux medication is recommended.

Imaging of the esophagus, stomach and early small intestine by a barium meal, may also be needed to see the extent of change.

It is important to modify your diet. Restrict spicy, acidic, fried foods.

Generally restrict the use of caffeine, chocolate, onion, mint, tomatoes, citrus fruits. You should use small frequent meals instead of large meals and wait 2 hours after eating before laying down.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
