What Causes Severe Hair Loss While Suffering From Hypothyroidism?

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism many years ago and have taken synthroid the entire time. I have my levels checked every 3 months - am told all is well, but I feel that something is off. During the course of the last year, I have lost a tremendous amount of hair and continue to do so daily. Now, the texture of my hair has changed. Could these be related to the thyroid disorder or should I be concerned about something else?

Hello,

You have been taking Synthroid for a long time half years now and your thyroid function tests seem normal which means the dose of Synthroid is correct. Hypothyroidism can cause hair loss but not in your case because you are on a correct dose of Synthroid. Severe hair loss in your case could be due to:
-Acute stress which leads to telogen effluvium. Once the stressful phase resolves the lost hair grows back.
-Low protein diet.
-Anemia.
-Alopecia areata.
-Nutritional deficiencies.
-You need to be examined by your doctor/dermatologist to reach a conclusive diagnosis along with a good history.

At this stage, I would like to advise you to use a supplement Keraglow lotion and high protein diet in the meantime and get a blood hemoglobin level checked. You can consume two eggs whites in a day to increase your protein intake.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
