What Causes Severe Headaches Along With Lightening Flashes In Eyes Post Concussion?

Hi Doctor, I had a fall 5 weeks ago. Presumably I hit my head amongst other injuries, as I had a gash on my forehead (hit pebbles), broke my glasses, and had marks where my glasses went into the side of my nose. I was reaching out only a few inches into the garden to poke down a short plastic spike on a solar light of about 4inches length when I fell forward down a slight slope into the pebbled garden. I don t remember initially going forward, but have slight memory of partway through, when I reached out with one hand to try and grab hold of a tall ceramic pot in the garden, even though I knew it would not support me, there was nothing else to grab onto. The pot tipped over and I saw it rolling sideways down the sloped garden. I am not sure if it hit me but I don t think so. I went down hard and landed face first with arms outstretched on the pebbles in the garden. I had no warning I was going to go over. It was night-time, but I had the outside lights on (none of which were LED or Spotlights, so not blindingly bright). I am a 64yo female and not very flexible, so wondered how I was going to get up, as I knew I did not have the strength to push myself up whilst lying downhill. I wiggled my way slowly backwards out of the garden and up onto the level brick pavers then got onto my knees and pulled myself up a column on the patio. The next day I went to ED had a Brain CT, bloods and ECG & Blood Pressure. All were normal. Told had concussion. I have since been suffering headaches, sharp lightning types around the head, as well as a deep, dull, sometimes ongoing ache in the forehead area. I am active, rarely sit still, slightly overweight and only medication I take is Metformin for insulin resistance. Have 2 yearly fasting GGT and results always normal. Have had eczema deep in my ears for 6yrs since just after undergoing a left mastectomy. Since fall I am now dizzy most of the time and especially when in the bathroom, and when I bend forward I become extremely woozy. 2yrs ago I was diagnosed with Adie s Pupil left eye. No headaches till fall. Just recently gave up working full-time. Everything else since the fall has healed apart from the dizziness and headaches. I had hoped they would resolve with time. My lifestyle is now limited and as I live alone it is a little scary. Scared I am going to fall again because of the dizziness. I just wonder if anything can be done? Thanks for listening.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The presence of severe headache with flashing lights after a head injury may be sequence of disturbances at the neurotransmitter release of brain system, compression at certain vital parts of the brain or else. Though the initial CT was normal, there can be later on changes involving particular parts of brain, I would recommend to discuss the need of repeat CT with your treating consultant.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
