What Causes Severe Hot Flashes In An Elderly Person?

My 90 year old father is having severe hot flashes from a hormone injection he had last December for a recurrance of prostate cancer. His PSA did go down to 0. After complaining for months about the flashes, they prescribed him megestrol acetate. Should this help his hot flashes or do you have any other suggestions.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Patients with prostate cancer who have undergone androgen deprivation therapy do experience vasomotor hot flashes as in case of your father.

Megestrol is a progestational agent and has shown good effects in ameliorating these hot flashes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
