What Causes Severe Intestinal Cramps, Bloating And Diarrhea While On Metformin?

I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes a year ago, and have been on 2000 mg of metformin since. Lately, I have severe intestinal cramps, bloating, followed by yellow high pressure diarrhea. I also noticed that the bloating subsides if I take echinacea/golden seal (which I was taking to treat a cold/cough). I am also concerned that the bloating (bulging) seems to be in my upper abdominal area, and more on the right side.

Metformin can cause the stated symptoms, but they usually start soon after starting the medication. I suggest you visiting your doctor and asking them to switch your medications as a trail to see if the symptoms will go away. If they do then its the metformin. He/she may replace or reduce the dose of medication.

Note ECHINACEA can cause stomach pain and diarrhea too.
