What Causes Severe Itching Behind The Ears?

My 7 year old grandson has severe skin scaling/itching behind both of his ears. His doctor told my daughter to use Lotrimin and hydrocortisone cream. Neither of these has helped and I was wondering about Clobetasol. My dermatologist prescribed this cream to me for a similar skin condition located near my ankle.Could this be used behind my grandson's ears?We are trying to get an appointment with a dermatologist but there's no appointment times available next week and he's scheduled to have his tonsils out mid June. This problem has been going on for about 2 months. Help!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As your daughter is only 7 years old, Clobetasol ointment or cream is usually avoided who is less than 12 years of age.

Now coming to the symptoms that your daughter is facing. It more likely dermatitis may be seborrheic, atopic, or contact dermatitis.

It is always advised to start with Lotrimin cream applying to the affected area with a cotton applicator. If Lotrimin does not begin to work, then after 1 or 2 weeks, then you can start applying Hydrocortisone cream after Lotrimin application. Cortisone cream should not be used for a longer period.

It is always advised that if with this treatment rash does not subside or clear up within a month, then you should immediately see a dermatologist in a clinic.

Few cares you need to take for your daughter while using the above treatment like:
• Wash the affected ear and area regularly with a wet cloth. Scrub properly to clean the scales and flakes. If you do not clean the scales and flakes properly and keep on applying the creams, the treatment will not be effective.
• Use mild medicated shampoo or soap for hair wash and bath.

Follow all these advices and meet a dermatologist next week as per appointment. Meanwhile, you can see your regular family doctor and continue with advices.

She will be good soon for upcoming events.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anuradha Das
