What Causes Severe Muscle Cramps In The Lower Leg At Night?

I experienced an agonising cramp in an outer muscle of my lower leg during the night which I have never experienced before. I couldnt move my ankle and had to walk around. The outer muscle was extremely tender during the attack. After walking around it subsided. Is this something I should get checked out by a GP?
