Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My wife is experiencing unusual and severe muscle pain following moderate exercise sessions. After doing some shoulder exercises the previous day she starting experiencing sever pain in her right shoulder. I would attribute her symptoms to muscle soreness but the symptoms are sever, she has intense pain without even moving her arm, symptom didn t occur for over 24 hours and without any apparent injury. Furthermore this is the second time in in a week that this has occurred. She recently experienced similar symptoms in her upper leg/groin area after doing some strength training for her legs. Any ideas what might be happening?
Hi, it most likely is a case of delayed onset muscle soreness. The pain typically peaks between 24-72 hours. The best way to prevent this from happening again is to gradually increase the weight and intensity of new exercises. While it might seem paradoxical, she can speed up the recovery time by performing low-intensity activity instead of resting. Applied heat seems to help as well.
