Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve been told that I have peripherL neuropathy by a neurologist and the only answer they gave me was to take gabapentin. I got up to 4800 mg a day to try and remove some of the pain. But it has made my brain like mush. So I slowly took myself off the medication totally.I have severe nausea every morning and it lessens a little during the day.My feet hurt daily with lots of stinging and my legs ache. I m losing strength and I ve lost weight. Please help me to try and keep as healthy as possible.
It is a terrible sensation, peripheral neuropathy. Always having that tingling pricks and needles in the foot! Pregabalin or gabantin are the drugs of choice to treat them. Their onset of action and complete attenuation of pain takes a considerable time. But like everyother drug these too have many side effects. Most common ones for these are decreased appetite, loss of weight, fatigue and impaired concentration and attention. These side effects are very much pronounced when you have exceeded the maximum dose.
Even in the worst conditions the maximum dose for pregablin is 600 mg. Your consumption of 4800mg is reaching toxic levels! Kindly decrease the dosage and keep it under 600 mg. These side effects will exist until the system clears away the excess. I would also recommend you to get a Renal Profile and Liver Fuction profile done to be one the safer side.
