What Causes Severe Pain And Bruise In Legs After Hamstring Injury?

I have what I believe to be (based on the symptoms) a grade 1-2 hamstring injury. The injury occurred 48 hours ago with the sudden on set of stabbing pain which subsided to a large degree. At the initial injury I was unable to walk without limping. I now can straighten my leg and walk on flat areas and up/down stairs without pain or minor pain. Now starting to have a bruise form just above the back side of the right knee. If I try to do a forward bend at the waste to touch the toes stretch causes pretty severe pain which radiates all the way to my right hip.

Hello,

You are suffering from hamstring injury that occurred 48 hours ago, presently pain has subsided but you are suffering from a bruise at the back of your right knee, bending forward causes pain that radiates to the right hip. Pain after hamstring injury is commonly cause due to strain or tear of the muscles or tendons of the hamstrings. Pull and strain causes pain but heals faster, partial or complete tear cause severe pain and may take a longer time to heal.

Apart from sports injury or fall, hamstring injury also occurs due to low flexibility and with age (aging). Bruise at the back of the knee is indicative of blood vessel that broke causing bruise and pain in the area affected. It can also be due to popliteal tendon tear or thrombophlebitis or baker's cyst. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP to detect the pathology so that the treatment can be started.

In the meantime, avoid activities that cause pain, rest, use compression on the upper leg and keeping the leg elevated for relief. You can take pain relieving medicines to get rid of discomfort. Surgery may be required to repair the damaged muscles or tendons. If you are not comfortable, avoid doing stretch exercises as it will further damage the affected tendons or muscles. If it takes time to heal get an MRI done.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
