What Causes Severe Pain And Spasms In Back Post Infusion Of Epidural Injection?

I had an epidural Thursday at 4:00 P.M. Friday was the first pain free day I ve had in years. I was eating dinner yesterday and sneezed and my back immediately started hurting and felt like spasms. I stood up and the pain lessened. I sat down and the pain was a throbbing pain, really bad. I have taken 2 Motrin and have iced my back, but each time I sit down It s the same horrible pain. I called the on call doctor here(PA) and he said use ice and it could be the pain killer from the epidural wearing off. I KNOW that s not the problem. I am quite worried and wonder what to do. Hate to go to hospital. It was a very hard sneeze.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to short term side effects of the epidural. I suggest to use painkillers such as Ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day. I also suggest to use cold compresses for local application. I recommend to avoid postures that can trigger the symptoms and avoid heavy lifting.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
