Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband s right hand has been very swollen for almost 2 month now. He ahs a lot of apin even up his arm. We went to an orthopedic surgeon, who tool r-rays and blood work. At the second visit, he told my husband that he has no idea what is wrong. He recommended a rheumatoid Arthritis specialist. We finally got an appointment and he thought it may be gout. He ran more blood test and gave him 6 days of prednasone (?) and had him take Colchicine. When I saw the blood test results, his uric acid is very low. His swelling went down while taking prednesone, but went right back up after his last pill. He is back in pain and can t use his right hand. We have to wait to December 3 to see the doctor again. What do you think it could be?
is the pain in joints or only in muscles. are the muscles sore when pressed, does the arm feel warm, are the muscles harder to feel than in the other arm which does not have pain? we need a lot more information to actually make a provisional diagnosis, the mere fact the pain disappeared by taking prednisolone indicates that the pain is certainly inflammatory in origin, but the second fact since it is localized to only one arm it may be but still diagnosis of poly myocytis rheumatica may or may not be considered.
to my mind myositis rheumatica is a possibility, please discuss it with your rheumatologist and get tests for inflammatory markers and RA factor, etc done under his advise and guidance.
