What Causes Severe Pain And Swelling In The Knees?
My 59 year old husband works construction. A few days ago he spent hours on his knees and came home with knee pain. The next day knees were painful & swollen, and he had trouble bending them & walking. He s been taking ibuprofen and using ice. He was feeling better yesterday, used diclofenac sodium topical gel 1per cent and really felt better last night and this morning. Middle of the day today, his knees really started to hurt again, and now he can t put any weight on one and they are both very painful.... Any thoughts?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
The stress of long standing on knees seem to have caused damage to the area under knee cap causing inflammation of cartilage, muscle tendon or bursa of the knee joint.
He should take rest/continue with home care with the use of crutches/elastic bandage & consult an orthopedic surgeon earliest for direct physical examination followed by MRI of the part to confirm type & extent of damage done.
You may need a strong dose of an anti-inflammatory drug like steroids (orally or local injection) and physiotherapy to get relief.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale,
