Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Yes, I have a sharp pain in the back of my left shoulder and it is very painful to lift my arm. The pain is shooting down my back and upper arm. I ve had this pain for several days and it appears to be getting worse. Cannot lay on my left side at night.
Pain in the limbs can be due to issues with the muscles or other soft tissue or the joints or the nerves in the area.
The fact that the pain is worse with certain movements makes nerve pain less likely.
Most common causes of such severe pain would be arthritis, trauma, tear of a tendon, bursitis (inflammation of the bursa/sac - by the shoulder joint). The use of anti-inflammatory pain medication would help, e.g. Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Cataflam, Celebrex.
Imaging of the shoulder joint may be needed as well to determine the definitive cause.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James,
General & Family Physician
