What Causes Severe Pain From The Left Hip To The Thigh?

My dad is in a lot of pain on his left side, it goes from his hip down to the back of the thigh to the back of his calf. He went to the doctor yesterday and he gave him muscle relaxer and it didn t do anything for him. Do you think it can be his sciatic nerve?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
Had your father met any accident or long sitting work?It seems to me piriformis syndrome causing irritation of sciatic nerve.usually the pain mostly occur in hips or buttocks which radiate down to the thigh, knee and calf. There are many causes of one side or both side Low back pain which radiates down to the lower limb as fracture, spinal nerve stenosis, same side long sitting, disc herniation, disc degeneration, sacroiliac joint disfunction, hip arthritis, muscle strain or sprain.typically the leg pain causes tissue injury.
Ask him to take rest avoid forward bending, weight lifting,
of course, it may be sciatica or sciatic nerve compresion or irritation.
But to rule out the exact cause of the pain get MRI or X ray.
