What Causes Severe Pain In Ankle After A Fusion?

I had my ankle fusion 4 years ago and for three years, I've had nothing wrong with it except the lack of movement which was ok considering the pain I was in before the surgery. Starting 3 days ago, I began having a lot of pain again. So much so I can't walk without crutches and have a hard time walking with those. I've been to three ER's and they all say nothing is broken, which I can understand becuase once an ankle if fused, it doesn't break. Once hospital is trying to say I have some nerve damage but I feel, as it is my body, that something else is going on in my ankle. Is there a possibility a tendon is messed up? or something else besides nerve damage. I can't see after three years of doing fine, all of a sudden I have nerve damage? What is your take on this?
