What Causes Severe Pain In Back Along With Irregular Bowel Movements?

My fiancé 66 year old, has been suffering with fatigue, lack of energy, recently lower abdominal burning, cramping, irregular bowel movements(no dark stools or evidence of bleeding), then pain started in upper abdomen with burning. He has lost weight (23#) over past few months. States he is trying to lose weight but appetite poor and afraid of having trouble with pain in abd. again. Got a blood count anemic! Iron 13 and hgb 8.8. Now noting pain across the mid back. He is scheduled for a endoscopy and colonoscopy end of May. MD wanted him to get done on urgent basis. He rescheduled for convenience of some other things that came up for him. Question being what is the back pain mid back that he is experiencing?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The symptoms of fatigue, lack of energy, recently lower abdominal burning, cramping, irregular bowel movements, upper abdomen pain with burning, weight loss, anemia, mid back pain -- all these could be signs of a serious medical conditions like cancer or severe infection or could be due to issues such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.

That is the reason why endoscopy and colonoscopy was advised by your MD and the treatment options depends on the test results.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks.
