Sciatica or nerve impingement can cause the symptoms you described. This pain however, occurs in the back and side of your leg and all the way down to your feet and toes.
This is usually worse on sitting for a long time or any activity/position that puts pressure on the nerve.
Symptoms to watch out for are progressive weakness of muscle of the leg and loss of bowel and bladder control , in which case see your physician immediately or go the ER.
did the pain start after a fall or any strenuous activity?
fracture of the vertebrae could lead to this as well.

nerve damage and the sooner that is avoided or taken care of, the better the prognosis.
in the meantime, avoid sitting for too long or activities that put a lots of pressure on your spine ( sleeping a soft bed, lifting weights, driving)
