What Causes Severe Pain In Ear Along With Ringing Sound?

I was away on business but I got a bad cold the day before I had to fly home. I had to take 3 flights to get home. The second flight was an older bigger plane. When starting to desend the presser in my head and ears was very painful. Once we landed the pain was still really bad. I was also very stuffed up so when I tried to blow my nose I hear a loud pop sound in my right ear and the pain I felt was the worst pain I've felt on my ear. This happen earlier tonight, my ear is ringing. Should I sesk medical attention or will it feel better on its own?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you have got an ear infection along with cold and as there are pressure changes in flight the symptoms can get exaggerated and there can be increased inflammation and fluid accumulation in the sinuses leading to stuffing or congestion..
Pain and ringing in ear can be due to infection while there is also a possibility that due to blowing the nose hard there has been perforation in the eardrum..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like otoscopic examination, audiometry, x ray etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
You can be advised a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkiller, anti allergics, decongestants oral as well as nasal sprays..
Do steam inhalations..
In case if there is perforation in the eardrum as the infection will subside, it will get healed gradually..
In case if perforation is larger surgical correction is advised..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
