What Causes Severe Pain In Hands And Upper Arms Of An Elderly Person?

My mother is 88, weighs about 85 lbs and has PAD in legs. She has recently been complaining of severe pain in hands and upper arms and bulging veins each morning. It is enough to wake her up each day. She is often extremely cold and tired. Her hands change color when they get cold. Our doctor has no clue and neither does her vascular specialist who placed a stent in her left leg about a year and a half ago. Should we see a heart specialist maybe?

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Her symptoms do not seem to be related to the heart. It seems to be Raynaud Syndrome. I would like to know the medication that she is taking. Sometimes betablockers can lead to such clinical situation as a common adverse effects. Anyway, before coming to this conclusion, I would recommend performing some tests:
- A cardiac ultrasound
- A Doppler ultrasound of arm vessels
- Complete blood count, PCR
- Blood lipid profile

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
