What Causes Severe Pain In Left Abdomen And Back Inspite Of Taking Motrin?

Severe pain in lower left side and back. been over a week, went immediately to OBGYN, thought i had a cyst in female area, had ultrasound and vaginal ultrasound that found nothing, then went to family doc and he did a ct scan that came back normal. gave me antibiotics and Motrin for pain and said to stay on them for a week to see if i might have an infection in my colon like diverticulitis. however when i read about diverticulitis it states i should be vomiting and have fever, but i do not. after a week if i am not better and pain still there he wants me to have a colonoscopy. i am 52 so i know it is time. but could this be any other thing to consider?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thanks for your question. Your physician is correct in that for persisting pain in your left lower quadrant as well as being over 50 years old, you should be evaluated with a colonoscopy. Diverticulitis should have been visible on the CT scan. Therefore, please follow through with the evaluation.
Best of luck
